Project Title:

Improving Production and Packaging of Pili Nut Products

Proponent:

Mr. Joseph Lomibao

The Enterpise

J. Emmanuel Pastries was a struggling home-based enterprise before SET-UP came in and extended assistance in 2004. From a meager capitalization of P 500 in early ‘90s, the firm operated on simple business management shared by a husband and wife team. With guts and determination, the couple nurtured the business as a commercial producer of pili nut delicacies supplied to offices and retail outlets in Naga City. The desire to grow was hampered by limited and inefficient production capacity.

The Intervention

SET-UP rendered S&T intervention to J. Emmanuel Pastries through upgrading of the manufacturing process of assorted pili nut delicacies. The interventions included: provision of roasting machine, vacuum packing and sealing equipment, oven, pili juice and oil extractor and stainless-top working tables. Prior to the acquisition of the equipment, DOST V assisted the plant design and improved its layout. The acquisition of processing equipment was further complemented by GMP/HACCP training, packaging / label design and nutritional analyses conducted by the DOST V-STLS now RSTL.

Its latest innovation is the adoption of cost-effective/green technologies using the gasifier-combustor that reduced cost of fuel consumption using waste pili shells as source of fuel.

Result and Impact

With these interventions, the company was able to continuously employ 61 employees. Productivity was increased with the upgrading of cooking process, reduction in fuel cost by 50% and packaging of pili confectioners from manual to mechanized. Additional 15 new product lines were added thru continuous R&D of products. It has become a multi-million enterprise with gross and domestic sales reaching P20 M. In 2012, the enterprise was awarded by DOST the first BEST SETUP Adoptor for its success in business.
