Enterpise
JIMBO Shrimp Hatchery business started in a rented foreigner-owned hatchery in Mercedes, Camarines Norte in 2002 with an initial capital of P700,000.00. The husband and wife’s persevering attitude, bore fruit with growth in investment until they were able to buy from the Taiwanese operator the entire facility in 2005. With added assistance from SET-UP, the firm even grew bigger with more stable operation. Critical in the project’s centerpiece is the stability of shrimp hatchery operation purposely to prevent mortality of stock during nauplii and fry stages.
The Intervention
SET-UP intervention enabled Jimbo Shrimp Hatchery to improve water heating system for concrete tanks with electric heater, salinometer to monitor salinity of water, submersible water pump, supplemental power generator and electric motor to address irregular power in the hatchery.
Result and Impact
The success of the hatchery’s operation relied on the efficiency of life-support equipment acquired through SET-UP. As an offshoot of the technology intervention, the company has commercialized nauplii production through construction of a nauplii laboratory worth P 4 M.
With these interventions, Mr. Jimbo Borile, proprietor and manager, was able to provide continuous employment to 10 direct and 53 indirect from municipal residents thereby contributing to the government’s drive to alleviate poverty. It became a multi-million enterprise with a gross sales reaching P2.3 M in 2008 in local market and an increase of 10% from the previous sales.
